Every now and again, you'll get a notification from a random user to play a treasure hunt. If you complete the hunt, you have a pretty high chance of obtaining an item. It's been a while since I 100%'d the game, but I'm fairly certain that the items are exclusive to treasure hunts. You've only got until January until the servers are discontinued.
Play Gravity Rush 1 first. People are wrong, you can get some fun bonuses for side quests. (costumes) Remember that 2 is like a three season anime. Each section of the game ends in a climax and leads into the next season and has a massive payoff for fans of the series at the end.
