Carina E and MKI pre-VVTi Avensis are pretty similar, there essentially the same car just with a few tweaks, although I prefer the design of the Carina having had experience of both. VVTi engined Avensis are pretty poor though, no way near as smooth or reliable as the earlier pre-vvti ones.
